Ninjas are invading Letchworth Fall Gathering XVIII GC8B3A3

For one day only, 5 ninjas will be roaming Letchworth State Park, but they have lost their backpacks. (They are Apprentice Ninjas, and still have much to learn) Can you locate the lost backpacks? At 10am, on October 5th, clues to these lost backpacks will be published.

Be the first to find one of the ninja-packs and re-unite it with your own awesome ninja geocoin (designed by Trevor Van Meter).

Snagthetag.com is a game within the game of geocaching: a first to find tag hunt. Event attendees hunt for tags the day of the event. The first player to find the tag gets to keep the tag. The finder can then bring the tag to the event and redeem it for a prize at Letchworth Fall Gathering.

TO REDEEM:

PRIZES MAY ONLY BE REDEEMED IN PERSON AT Letchworth Fall Gathering XVIII

One Tag Per Household! As a courtesy, please respect the one tag per household rule. If you find a tag, please log in and claim it as soon as possible. Unclaimed tags cannot be redeemed or transferred.

The ridge jutting into the canyon is called "The Hogsback" for its resemblance to a wild boar's high hunched spine. The Genesee river flows one mile around this narrow peninsula. The river turns in many directions within the park, including nearly due south in its overall northward flow, but this is its most abrupt loop.

Letchworth State Park, renowned as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern U.S. The Genesee River roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs--as high as 600 feet in some places--surrounded by lush forests. Hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails. Trails are also available for horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Letchworth offers nature, history and performing arts programs, guided walks, tours, a summer lecture series, whitewater rafting, kayaking, a pool for swimming and hot air ballooning.

The name of this overlook comes from the Seneca word Gah-Da-Hoh, or "bank in front." During a warming period between glaciers more than 100,000 years ago, the Genesee River created a new course by eroding this valley. The repassage of the great ice sheets then created gentler slopes and desirable farmland. Subsequent wanderings of the river in this valley cut a cliff face into the gentler slope and thus formed the "bank in front."

The appearance of the Lower Falls has changed dramatically since the mid-1950's. At that time the Lower Falls consisted of two distinct sections, a lower section and an upper section, with about 350 feet separating them. The crest of the lower section was located roughly 350 feet upstream of the foot bridge. It had a drop of approximately 30 feet and a crest width of roughly 70 feet. The crest of the upper section of the Lower Falls had a drop of approximately 40 feet and a crest width of roughly 300 feet.
